When we explore, when we take a previously untraveled road, when we take the time to keep our eyes open to new experiences, when we look, we find beauty everywhere, in an old building, in a faded advertisement, in some weeds alongside a road, it is always out there, we must only take the time to look.

leaf

The intricacy of a simple leaf, red lines, mottled green background, detrius from another plant or flower caught in its veins, nature is simple but complex, easy to focus on but impossible to understand.

barn

If you take the road less traveled, the back road, the road that leads nowhere, you will usually find something that was abandoned, or left to rot, or simply not taken care of. These objects are often very photographic. Unfortunately in our society we are too quick to tear something down that is old, to brand it an eyesore, to replace it with some nondescript block that we call progress.

Reeds Sun City

In nature there is chaos and there is order. There is disarray and there are patterns. Nature is messy, nature is neat. Nature is a paradox, and an ideal.

heron

A stirring, a rising, a burst of white against the trees, with a few mighty flaps it burst across the camera lens after I violate its space. Panning I catch part of it in focus, not the picture I might have wanted, but the picture I took.

The simple elegance of birds in their natural element, whether it be a swan in water, a heron in flight, cannot be equaled by us.

Shadows

The combination of sun and objects cast a magical web over the mundane. Here a concrete floor, gray, no color, no real design, made interesting by the casting of a shadow from a wrought iron chair.

beach chair

Sometimes you can't set up a photograph any better than one you happen to find randomly. Walking on the beach at Hilton Head there was a beach chair that was abandoned in the tide, and it had a Hilton Head logo on it. What better way to describe the beach we were on.

stones

A simple arrangement of stones on an orange plate with light streaming through blinds creates an interesting pattern. Sometimes you stumble over possible photographs, sometimes you create a photograph without even knowing it. This stone arrangement is in one of my bedrooms. The shadows made it much more interesting.

color redux

Originally uploaded by fauselr.
Color can be a tart or a princess, a saint or a sinner, bold as a rock and roll band or subdued as a classical trio. It can whisper to you, shout at you, overwhelm you or sedate you. The whole world is color. Aren't we lucky?

Seduction

Color. It screams at you, it whispers to you, it hits your eyes like a baseball bat, or it strokes your eyelids like a gentle breeze. It is all around us, everything we look at has color, sometimes meant to attract us, sometimes meant to repel us (think of butterflies whose color means poison to many animals). The most common object made unusual by its color. Color blends, or stands out, it shocks, it tames, it is what makes the world so interesting.

bike on beach

Originally uploaded by fauselr.
It was a frustrating evening at the beach. The pictures of the egret I took were disapointing, a couple of other pictures I took didn't do anything for me. As I was leaving the Hilton Head beach, I saw this simple shot, a bicycle leaning against a bunch of beach chairs in the sand, the rider forsaking the bike for the waves. It was almost a throw away picture, I almost didn't take it, but seeing I have a Nikon D70 and I wouldn't have to pay for more film or processing, and had plenty of room on my compact flash card, I took it. It turned out to be the only picture of the 15 I took that I liked. Take lots of pictures, especially if you have a digital camera, you never know which one will be the one you like.

Looking through the Camera's Eye.

Originally uploaded by fauselr.
Even the things we see (or don't see because they are so commonplace) become different when looked at through the lens of a camera. I see this object everyday, multiple times during the day, but it looks quite different when looked at through the lens and at different angles while holding the camera in my hands. It is one of my front headlights of my car, something I never look at normally, but happened to be holding my camera while standing in front of my car, looked through the lens, and saw a photograph.

In your backyard, in your front yard, there is always a picture. You just have to look for it or in this case be lucky and catch him out of the corner of your eye. He stayed around while I went inside and got my camera. Afterwards I went to the gym, when I got back 1 hour later, he was still there.

With animals you have to be ready. You have to anticipate their movements or be prepared to take a lot of photographs till you get the one you want. The nice thing about digital pictures is I don't have to pay for developing to decide whether I want to keep the picture or not.
