Boat, Lady's Island, South Carolina

A small boat on a small pond. The pond couldn't have been more than 20 feet across, yet it had this little boat on it. It must have been used for something but I have no idea what.

Art Building, Beaufort, South Carolina

What I thought was a church turned out to be the Art building at the University of South Carolina in Beaufort. A beautiful old building that has been converted to another use rather than torn down.

Old Sea Island Sign, Beaufort, South Carolina

The palmetto leaves frame the sign nicely, definitely saying South Carolina.

Broken Window, Beaufort, South Carolina

This house used to be lived in. Someone must have sat by this window, reading the paper, watching TV, smoking a cigarette. Someone must have looked out this window, looking at the people who passed by. Maybe they looked in, wondering who this person or persons were. Maybe they knew them, nodded their heads hello, as they walked by on their way to wherever they were going. Someone must have decided to leave this house, to never return, to let it fall into disrepair, to turn their backs on its future. Every place has a history, every place has a past, someone who lived there, loved there, cared for it. Maybe they died, maybe they became to physically ill to continue to take care of the house, maybe they moved away because of a new job, a new love, or to be with their family.

Old Sign, Beaufort, South Carolina

One of the benefits for photographers of letting old buildings stand and fall apart in their own time is the old signs that sometimes are on the buildings, giving them even more character than the rot and erosion have already given them.

Door Knob, Art building, Beaufort, South Carolina

Who entered the building using this doorknob? Was it someone who desperately wanted to create something, who couldn't wait to get in the building and work with whatever materials waited behind the door? Was it someone young, who was just finding out what they wanted as their medium, or someone old and comfortable with their creative side? Every door is a mystery, and every doorknob is a clue to that mystery.

Seagull with fish, Dreissen Beach, South Carolina

A lucky seagull with a fish that it caught. It had to guard the fish from other seagulls and birds who watched it enviously. The effort involved in diving into the waves and catching a fish, the sharp eye of the seagull, all lead to this moment, where the bird is alone with its captured prey.

Shell

Not everything has to be of a grand, epic scale. A small shell is filled with color and with amazing geometric patterns. We only have to take the time to observe the world to realize it is filled with amazing and fascinating things.

Life Preserver, Savannah, Georgia

In Savannah, even the life preservers are colorful.

The geometric pattern of the paving stones, the empty chair by itself on the stones, makes for an interesting pattern.

The patterns and shapes drew me to take this picture.
